My First Patent

I’ve been awarded my first patent (you can see it here, if you’re interested). I came up with a “system” of designing a pattern for carpet that uses rotated identical elements to make up a large repeat.

The advantages of this new system are cost, aesthetics and installation. The very large repeat allows for an all over pattern that doesn’t create “patterning” lines. Have you ever been in an airport and seen those bad repeat lines going up the corridor….well, maybe you don’t..but that’s all I see! Designs made using my patent overcome those bad repeat lines. Because there are elements of the same pattern within the pattern, matching can be perfect to the increments of the pattern (instead of having to match the entire repeat that is often as big as 6 feet wide by 8 feet). This creates less waste (less carpet in the landfill), lower costs, and makes the carpet easier to install.

Here are 2 photos of my “Boxstudy” carpet for Tandus, which uses this theory.

To get this pattern I started with this element and flipped and rotated it in my custom software:

After working with it and creating a design I liked I got the image below. “Boxstudy” is the final result.
